The North Carolina Arts Council is launching an online public survey to seek the opinions of New Hanover County and Wilmington-area residents on the role of the arts in community life and the importance of an arts council to the region.

Last fall, the N.C. Arts Council awarded a $15,000 grant to the Wilmington City Council to fund research to identify arts resources in Wilmington and New Hanover County. The grant, part of the Arts Council's Creative Economies program, is being used for research and documentation of arts and cultural assets in the region and to help determine the role and priorities of a new arts council.

Additionally, the research is assisting in designing economic development strategies based on the areas rich arts and living traditions.

The cultural assets in the area are among the richest in the state and provide jobs, attract visitors, create products, influence spending and build community vitality.

While the N.C. Arts Council has been collaborating with local arts, education and community leaders on the creation of a new arts council for Wilmington-area, the online survey provides a chance for residents to voice their thoughts and opinions on the process. From now until March 1, residents can participate in the survey, www.surveymonkey.com/s/TDFBR73.

This survey information will be used to shape the recommendations for a new Wilmington-area arts council and its programs.
